Around the time that my previous article about Michael Luten was published, he passed onwards. He left a wonderful legacy for those whom he touched in his life; and the team of caregivers, nurses, and specialists is continuing the momentum of “paying it forward”.
The team’s experience with Michael highlighted a need for hospice care in San Cristobal and the rest of Chiapas; and opportunities to develop an accomodation for that need. The pandemic has resulted in a very dynamic and organic economy here where, at any given moment, the lockdown condition may change from orange, to yellow, to green, to red on a near week-by-week basis. Yet, such official declarations are made to account for several factors, including the impact on the local economy which is dependent on tourism. (Mexico presented their status in terms of traffic lights.)
As a result, for the team who took a few months out of their lives to care for Michael; they emerge into the realm of extreme uncertainty and possibility where there is interest in carrying their skills forward. Currently they are investigating the concept of developing coaching and training videos from each of the areas of expertise so that all the team members diversify their skills and can help train other caregivers for future hospice endeavors; and are looking at different sources of additional funding to launch what is initially a equipment rental, consulting, and support business.
For many ex-pats, living in Mexico implies that we contribute to the local economies and not take wealth from it; and that we do what we can to improve the quality of life of our hosts; with their permission and conscious choices.
At the moment, things are still developing, and a formal point of contact has not been established yet. Thank you for taking the time to read about these endeavors.
