If the soul is ignored, the body must announce its existence. Craniosacral work, along with somato-emotional release work, is one way to access the deeper messages of the body. If you think of your body’s energies as having a finite amount to “spend” each day on all the various things we need to do, then suppressing anger, frustration, disappointing relationships, childhood traumas, (and other things that we feel we must hide from the world) uses much of that energy up, and you can see there’s very little left for basic body maintenance. The immune system is especially vulnerable to this lack of sufficient energy and to the suppression of discomfort and emotional difficulties.
I’m sure most of us have experienced the phenomenon of having to “hold it all together” for the holidays, only to fall ill as soon as the party is over.
When the immune system works well, it keeps the body in homeostasis, ready to respond in a healthy way to foreign invaders such as bacteria or viruses; it kills the cancerous cells that our bodies produce naturally every day; it keeps your arteries clear and flexible. But when we suppress the immune system by living with constant stresses and not seeking to understand and process our emotions, nor to take positive action to live in a healthier manner, then infections and dysfunctions can take hold. In addition, societal stressors like sexism, racism, poverty, and uncertainty about the future, can be major contributors to internalized illnesses.
Craniosacral therapy can allow you to speak to your own body and even your own immune system to keep you healthy. You can be unburdened of old traumas and old energies that are holding you back from living fully. Your body and soul can speak openly to you, and you can learn to listen.
