Age: Just a Number?
by Dr. Carmen Montano, M.D.
This is a common phrase that we hear all the time, “age is just a number.” But is it? In the medical world, age is a very important factor that weighs heavily when assessing our risk for many diseases. It’s also is a key factor in determining the prognosis and results of treatments.
Age affects several systems in our body and reflects in our general well being. It put us at risk for cardiovascular disease, stroke, osteoporosis, dementia, cancer, degenerative joint disease and more. In the skin, age predisposes us to brown spots, telangiectasias (spider veins) seborrheic keratoses, sebaceous hyperplasia, collagen loss and saggy skin and more.
Aging is truly not for sissies.
Not everyone goes through the aging process in the same way. Some let their bodies fall apart while others follow a healthy lifestyle to postpone the changes aging often (and sometimes inevitably) bring.

“Aging with Dignity” is another common phrase I hear a lot. For many people, this means “let the aging process takes it course.” To me, it means to stay healthy as long as we can…taking care to promote the best functioning of our internal organs, Mind and spirit as well as our biggest organ in our body: The Skin. The sooner we can take care of the changes in our skin, the better chances for a natural and youthful look. Like in any other disease in our body early time for treatment is very important for great results.
